This is a lovely, but dull, ballad which addresses the good, the bad, and the ugly about Morrissey's (then) adopted homeland. It contains another of those glaring deliberate grammatical errors which so irk me ("I wish you'd stay where you is" - quite reminiscent of "We knows when the school bus comes and goes" from "Ambitious Outsiders"). I think the most annoying thing about this song, though, is that it's so tame. The worst that Morrissey can say about America is "you know where you can shove your hamburger" and "you big fat pig"? Come on! I can think of THOUSANDS of horrid things that I could say about America, and I love this country too! (In all fairness, the line "... but where the President is never black, female, or gay and until that day you've got nothing to say to me to make me believe" is quite excellent.) Also, the opening lines, "America your head's too big because America your belly's too big"? Come on - that's about as clunky a line as Morrissey can come up with. Musically, this song is nothing special either - just another of the minor guitar strummers that Alain can come up with in his sleep. This is surely one of Morrissey's worst album openers, and it sets my expectations for the rest of You Are The Quarry disturbingly low.
